Issue 47: 16 Years Ago: Friendship House Holds Dedication Ceremony

| Construction of Friendship House began in November 1990 and was completed in October 1991 at a cost of approximately $565,000. It replaced a facility on Davis Avenue in Leesburg which had been leased by the county. Friendship House is a rehabilitation program of the Loudoun County Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services. It provides services for adults with severe or persistent mental or emotional disorders. Participants in Friendship House are referred to as “members,” to emphasize their active role in the rehabilitation process. The program focuses on the members’ strengths, promotes a sense of ownership and responsibility, and helps them develop the skills necessary to function more effectively in their personal relationships, living arrangements and employment situations. The program provides such services as pre-vocational training, transitional employment, case management, crisis intervention, and opportunities to socialize informally with other members. About 75 members currently participate in programs on a daily or weekly basis at Friendship House, which serves over 100 people every year. The 6,188 square-foot facility was designed by the Leesburg architectural firm of Ballinger LaRock, and was constructed by R. Edward Daffan, Inc., of Manassas.
